Fostering innovation and collaboration to advance research in neurodegenerative disorders

Imagine having parts of you – thoughts, memories, musings – stripped away, either quickly or slowly, losing fragments here and there, until, eventually, you forget street names. Or maybe you begin acting out of character. Maybe you stop recognizing people, like your family, altogether. This is the unfortunate reality for approximately 750,000 Canadians living with dementia.

There are no cures or treatments available to slow or stop neurodegenerative disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Further to this, persistent injuries such as concussions, sustained while playing sports, can increase the risk of long-term neurodegeneration. In a bid to increase our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases, and perhaps, one day, help inform treatment, the Dale E. Creighton Brain & Biobank (DECBB) was formed.

The DECBB aims to foster innovative and collaborative research across Canada and internationally through the curation of rich clinical data, brain imaging, blood biomarkers and brain tissue samples from donor patients. Through the combination of data and samples collected, the goal is to expedite the discovery of mechanisms that lead to neurodegenerative dementias and ultimately facilitating groundbreaking research for preventative and curative therapies. With your support, an investment in research and innovation to the Dale E. Creighton Brain & Biobank will allow vital research in neurodegeneration to continue thereby advancing discoveries and uncovering more pieces to the convoluted puzzle that is dementia.
